10 Point SEO Checklist For Website Redesign in 2022

SEO is without a doubt the most important aspect of any successful website or successful website redesign.  It is very difficult to get your site to appear at the top of search engines if you do not know what you are doing.  Most people will spend money on many different forms of advertising and instead could have spent it on SEO and had top results for years past their paid advertisements running out.

This article will run through ten point that should be looked at when implementing or updating SEO strategies. I have spent sometime on this redesign SEO checklist.

1) Mobile Optimization(SEO)

Google's algorithm favors mobile-friendly websites and website redesign as they take up less bandwidth which means they can load faster than sites that aren't mobile-optimized, because of this fact 70% of traffic to websites comes from mobile sources (smartphones, tablets, etc).  So, if your site is not 100% mobile friendly you will lose out on a lot of traffic.

2) Title Tags

Having relevant title tags for every page and post is important because it tells someone what the page is about before they click on it and that search engine know exactly what your website or blog post is about.  Without these, it becomes very difficult to find pages and posts through search engines, so it's best to have them in place at all times. So this should have been a part of you design, not the website redesign.

3) Meta Descriptions

A meta description is used by search engines when displaying results on Google or any other popular search engine.  These are short blurbs that tell people what the page will contain before they click on the link, and they should be unique every time.  A lot of webmasters will use stock descriptions or even use the post or pages description which is not good practice because it takes away from your site's quality.

4) Keyword Density

Keyword density provides a SE with a way to measure the relevance of keywords to a page, website, article, etc.  It tells them exactly what that particular item is about and how important it is within that context.  The best densities are 1-2% on body copy and 0-0.5% in articles and posts (unless you're writing about SEO).

5) Content Quality

It goes without saying that content quality is very important, but many people neglect this aspect of SEO because they want traffic or links to their site.  This is a mistake for many reasons, but the main one is that quality content will keep visitors coming back and if you can create it regularly you'll find people start linking to your posts themselves, also Google loves good content so it wins/win all round really.

6) H1 Headings

H1 headings are used on HTML pages as the first heading of each page, they should be relevant to the keywords in that article's title tag and should appear at least once on each page. It's important to know what you are doing with these because if you don't it will damage your chances of ranking well within search engines results pages (SERPS).

7) Anchor Text

This is used most often when trying to generate backlinks to a site, if someone has a popular domain they can generate hundreds of links from many different domains pointing back at them because their anchor text was relevant and targeted.  To do this effectively you need to know what keywords are going into the link so that it generates traffic for its intended purpose.

8) Social Sharing

Social sharing buttons help with your conversions as well as getting your content out there on social media channels.  You want people to share but not just any old images or posts, these must be relevant and interesting otherwise people will ignore them or worse still block them altogether.

9) Internal Linking

Linking between pages within your site or blog posts is crucial for several reasons.  The first is that it makes it easier for search engines bots to crawl the site and secondly, people stay on your site longer because they can explore related content within one place without them having to click away from your page.  You also want to be linking between blogs/pages you've written so that visitors will go through and read more of them (building visitor and reader retention). Draw out your final internal linking and stage a website redesign.

10) Website Navigation

Having a good navigational structure is important as this will help with user experience on your website or blog, people need to know where they are going and how many clicks it's going to take them.  Chances are they won't stick around if they have too many hoops to jump through just to get where they want.  If the navigation is too complex or looks messy people will click away instantly it's just human nature.

Bonus 1) Google Analytics

Google Analytics(GA) has to be the most important thing you need to add to your website to measure improvements or not. Nothing measured can be improved. You need to add Google Search Console to amplify Google Analytics to the next level for your old or new website.

Bonus 2) Google Search Console

Google Search Console was once named Google Webmaster or Google Webmaster Tools. This is especially useful for a site launch new sitemap and the original site crawl. It will give more information than any other analytics that I know of currently. It will tell you what people are searching for on Google and what they are clicking on to reach you.

Bonus 3) XML Sitemap

A sitemap will allow Google and other SE to index all the web pages on your website to include in its search results. It is exactly the entire index for your site and very efficient to make certain every web page is seen. Every SE loves a sitemap. This will help you examine you analyze your url structure.

Bonus 4) Google Tag Manager

Google suite of tools are important for measuring your site.

There are many other ways of optimizing your website but these are some of the top ones that get results, also it's worth knowing that things change all the time so new methods appear constantly, what you need to do is stay on top of this and don't be afraid to adapt when new trends come along as this is how we learn and grow as a digital marketer.
